Whether you're gone for a week or a season, The North Face Dome 5 Tent is the ideal expedition design for serious mountaineering and guiding. From top to bottom, The North Face recently updated the design with a lighter and more stable architecture. At the top you'll find a ring-shaped aluminum hub that helps eliminate unnecessary pole sections and reduces the overall tent weight without sacrificing stability. There's also an upper level vent that applies a new lift technology that helps the tent work with the wind instead of being knocked around. Despite the reduced weight, the Dome 5 still offers alpine extras like snow flaps along the base and hanger hooks for storing the canopy. Like many of the best designed mountaineering tents, the Dome 5 has an integrated polyurethane view window that's cold tested to -60F so you can check on the weather without compromising any of the warmth inside the tent. The guy-out points are numerous enough to weather big blows and the No-Stretch Kevlar guylines with camming adjustments are ideal for pitching in open spaces. Plenty of internal pockets along the walls make it easy for everyone to find a place for stowing their essentials, with easy access even after the last candle lantern flickers out.

Work through a whistling ridgeline and stomp out a platform high above crystalline winter valleys. The Polaris is an ultra lightweight, single wall tent designed for mountaineering and winter conditions. A waterproof/breathable 3-layer PTFE-laminate fabric provides reliable shelter in white outs and downpours. DAC aluminum poles, in a freestanding three-pole design, will stand up to punishing winds and heavy blankets of snow. Flat pole sleeves and adjustable pole tension pockets keep the Polaris taut and aerodynamic in harsh conditions. Waterproof, silicone-coated nylon is used in the vents, pole sleeves, and vestibule to reduce weight and bulk. A fully featured tent that still weighs less than five pounds, the Polaris is suitable for any alpine challenge.

Maybe shave down the rack, maybe carry less food, but don't ditch the R2 Vest for climbs where core warmth matters as much as weight. Its unique variable-knit polyester ensures optimal breathability, moisture-management, and warmth for low-bulk core insulation that's especially effective when worn under a shell. Stretchy R1 fabric (made with 60 recycled polyester) lines the inner collar for next-to-skin comfort. The vest has an easy-to-use front zipper, welded-in zippered handwarmer pockets and forward-set shoulder seams for comfort with a pack. Recyclable through the Common Threads Recycling Program.

Excellent for four-season use and any outdoor adventure that risks hunkering down in inhospitable conditions, The North Face VE 25 is the most popular expedition tent made by The North Face. With a trail weight of 9 lbs., 12 oz., it's considerably lighter than most tents in the expedition line and it offers considerably more space than the two-person Mountain 25 tent (many mountaineers opt for the advantage of a three-person tent for two people because they can capitalize on a little more space when they're hunkered down and waiting out storms). Like many of the best designed mountaineering tents, the VE 25 has an integrated polyurethane view window that's cold tested to -60F so you can check on the weather without compromising any of the warmth inside the tent. If things do get too muggy, unzip the adjustable mesh vents for bug-free cross ventilation. The guy-out points are numerous enough to weather big blows and the no-stretch Kevlar guylines with camming adjustments are ideal for pitching in open spaces. The VE 25 comes with internal storage pockets for gear, but if you really want to organize (and possibly dry out) your mountaineering and backpacking gear, get the fully-compatible #2 Gear Loft from The North Face.
